The approaching hurricane 2011 Irene reminds us how important it is to prepare in advance for destructive winds. People up and down the East Coast are securing their homes with hurricane shutters to minimize damage. Hurricane shutters should be installed during the off-season to ensure proper fit, function, available material, and time necessary to attach. Properly installed hurricane shutters can significantly reduce damage to houses and businesses. Hurricane shutters applied in haste creates a poor fit and reduced protection. Hardware stores and lumber yards also quickly run out of material, which leaves some homeowners without protection.
