In President Obama’s State of the Union Address last night he mentioned “shuttered windows”. Unfortunately, the entire text reveals that the phrase was used negatively.
He stated, “I’ve seen it in the shuttered windows of once booming factories, and the vacant storefronts of once busy Main Streets.”
Yes, “shuttered windows” is often used to indicate that a business has ceased doing business. While we do like the President of the United States talking about shutters, and his phrase is not incorrect or out of context, we just don’t like shutters being associated with such an unfortunate circumstance.
Maybe next time he will lavish praise about how much he loves the interior shutters in the White House.
